If you still enjoy browsing stores for movies on disc, you're not alone. DVD remains by far the most popular home entertainment format, according to a new survey of 11,000 US consumers by The NPD group. 63 per cent of the average $25 per month outlay on home entertainment was lavished on the format.
Only 9 per cent went on VOD services and just 7 per cent on Blu-ray. Downloads accounted for a paltry 3 per cent of the monthly spend. It seems that video streaming remains a minority pursuit, and people still covet physical discs. Intriguingly, 80 per cent of those who download also buy and rent DVD.
Russ Crupnick, industry analyst for NPD, observes: ‘While many in the home video industry worry that digital consumers might walk away from packaged media, that hasn’t happened yet. Discs are still and by far the dominant way Americans enjoy home video, but there is an increasing appetite for digital options. The good news is that the consumers engaging with digital video today also tend to be heavy consumers of DVD and Blu-ray, but it remains to be seen just how long physical discs and digital formats can co-exist.’
This will continue for as
Alan Smithee (not verified) - 13 May 2009 - 8:43pmThis will continue for as long as you can buy £3 DVDs in the supermarket. Blu-Ray has its market - and most of it visits this website - but the mass market for DVD has made it virtually disposable. There's a bloke in my office who goes to Tesco on his lunch every day and comes back with at least one cheap DVD that looked half interesting - most of them are lucky to be watched once before they're put on the shelf or traded in at Blockbuster for £1 off a new release.
I agree, this will continue, until Blue ray disc drops
Kevin (not verified) - 14 May 2009 - 12:53amI have a Playstation 3 for a year now, and I haven't even bought a single blue ray movie disc. Because of its price, way too expensive. I also build myself a new home theater system, in my bedroom, with a 19" hdtv, and just a dvd player and a Powerful receiver / 7.1 . which is great. Not planning to get a second blue ray player, yet... still waiting for the movie disc to drop its price and also hope that HDMI cables get more cheaper...too!
Hope to see, if blu-ry movie disc ( new release movies ) near future ( for $20 Canadian ) not $35. For $35 ,we can get 3-4 dvd's.
BR price
