Channel 4 teams with Sainsbury's for 3D shows

Can’t wait for Sky to launch its 3DTV channel next year? Then stay tuned to Channel 4. The broadcaster is teaming with supermarket giant Sainsbury's to distribute 3D spex for a of 3D programming, scheduled for this Autumn.

Unlike Sky, C4 is using low-cost ColorCode technology for its gimmick-cast. ColorCode broadcasts look (relatively) normal without 3D glasses, but gain depth when viewed through amber and blue filters. Colour information is conveyed through the amber lens, while parallax information, which creates the perception of depth, comes via the blue. The same technology is being used by Virgin 1 for its Chuck 3D episode, being broadcast tomorrow (Tuesday August 25 at 9pm). ColorCode glasses have been distributed in copies of TV & Satellite Week magazine.

The season of C4 3D shows will include Derren Brown's 3D Magic Spectacular, The Greatest Ever 3D Moments (a compilation of movie and TV clips) and the two-part The Queen in 3D, comprising rare newsreel of the Coronation from 1953, shot by director Bob Angell and cameraman Arthur Wooster. There will also be new 3D footage of Her Majesty taken at this June’s Garter Ceremony held at at Windsor Castle.

Gimmick, yawn,

Gimmick, yawn, gimmick.

Aren't those the same specs we were given as kids and they never worked particularly well.

I have a couple of DVDs that use the colorcode 3d and journey to the centre of the earth which uses the standard red/blue analglyph glasses. The colorcode versions while not as good as polarised glasses offer a good alternative until 3d tech catches up at home with the cinema.
