LG has announced its first range of LED-backlit LCD TVs. The new screens, which are just 24.8mm thin, will launch in Europe this summer. Two 55-inch models have been unveiled, the 55LH95 and 55LH93, both ‘designed specifically to target the high-end segment and offer unmatched quality and design’ says LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company President and CEO Simon Kang. ‘These new models will change the LED LCD TV market landscape and we expect these devices to reinforce the premium image of LCD TVs in general.’

The company says it has improved on the LED edge lighting technique used by rivals Samsung and Sony. The bigscreen models feature 3,360 LED lights, seven times the number in some rivals. The company also claims a contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1 with local dimming. Refresh rates are set at 200/240Hz. The sets also offer a wireless HD link from a tuner box.

LG says 42- and 47-inch LED models will join the range before the end of the year. However, these will not be super-slimline designs. The company expects to sell 5 million LED screens in 2010, from a global market of 30 million, and predicts that as much as 40 per cent of the LCD TV market could shift to LED by 2011.

Sadly, none of these models are heading for the UK. When asked for more information about the LED range, LG spokesman Mike Sharman told HCC: 'Unfortunately those models won’t be coming to the UK. Sorry I can’t be more helpful, but we will continue to send on relevant new product news as and when it is available.'

What about LED Zones?

How many Zones will they have? Stating 3,360 LED lights doesn't tell the whole story if there are very few LED zones, ie. if only a small number of blocks of LEDs can be turned on/off/dimmed. A low number of LED zones will not lead to a very good picture or good black levels.
