If you have Crank 2: High Voltage on Blu-ray and are having problems playing the disc, you're not alone. Lionsgate has responded to HCC's concerns about the general compatibility of the disc, confirming that the BD Live title will only play back correctly on Profile 2 Blu-ray players with internal memory (or connected external USB).
If you try and spin the disc on a Profile 2 player without sufficient memory available, the film itself will be visible only in a small, distorted onscreen window (see below).
A source close to Lionsgate admitted the issue with the disc but denied the Studio was at fault, explaining: 'The difficulties that are being experienced are not with the disc itself but with certain Profile 2.0 Blu-ray players that do not contain internal memory. To rectify the problem all you need is to add external memory (1GB is more than sufficient). If your player doesn't have it, you are likely to experience problems.'
Blu-ray owners are used to being told that not all functionality may be available on particular players, but this is the first disc we have experienced which restricts access to the movie itself.
Bizarrely, owners of older Profile 1.0/1.1 machines will not have a problem with the platter, as that hardware lacks any BD Live functionality. And naturally, if you own a PS3, the title plays without problems.
What a shock...or rather, it
Alan Smithee (not verified) - 26 September 2009 - 10:42amWhat a shock...or rather, it was only a matter of time.
I somehow wonder if this is due to extra content - or because the DRM doesn't have enough room to 'validate' your disc.
If the players are out of
Raymond Blue (not verified) - 28 September 2009 - 2:10pmIf the players are out of spec (i don't mean older profile, just that the spec for whatever profile isn't done right), blame the manufacturer.
Otherwise is really stupid - whatever the profile, at the very least, the movie should play properly - i could forgive a disc giving message "sorry your player doesn't have the features needed to play the extras", but the movie itself should always play properly. Ridiculous if people buying legit copies should go through such rubbish.
Memory correction
Eric (not verified) - 3 November 2009 - 2:44amI have the Sony SBD550. This disc did not work until I plugged in the 1 Gig stick that came with the player. Now it works fine. All it needs is memory. I would imagine that more and more discs will start to experience this problem as more "stuff" gets added to Blu-ray discs.
Very frustrating, sent Crank
dh (not verified) - 15 November 2009 - 4:37pmVery frustrating, sent Crank back to blockbuster three times. SBD350 not close to broadbanc connection so had to find a wireless settop box and hub; updated firmware. Now several hours searching the internet this morning to discover I need an exteranl usb mem stick. They need to put insructions in the damn disk box!
Crank 2 won't play
Alan Smithee - 17 June 2010 - 5:53pmI totally agree that there should have been instructions with the disc or a warning on the outside. I have exchanged the disc twice. I purchased a cable to connect to my internet and upgraded the firmware on all three of my BD players. I also plugged in the usb drive. Spent hours searching the internet and the disc still will not play.
