No 3D for Monsters Vs Aliens on DVD and BD; current anaglyph technology 'unsatisfactory'

The animated smash Monsters Vs Aliens is coming to DVD and Blu-ray this Autumn, but we won't be getting the 3D version of the film. The DreamWorks Animation film was a big hit at cinemas in its 3D incarnation, with stereoscopic screenings accounting for a whopping 58 per cent of the film's US box office takings during its opening weekend. However, speaking to Home Media Magazine, DreamWorks Animation chief Ann Daly has revealed that the existing anaglyph technology for home use isn't able to replicate the technology used to create the 3D version of the film.

'The movie itself was developed with the notion of doing the RealD-Dolby experience in theaters, and those specs are not ideal for the anaglyph presentation' said Daly. 'It’s a completely different process, and when we started to look at how it would look in the home, we were not satisfied'.

That said, the studio is still planning to release a 3D version when home technology improves. 'We’ve been paying a lot of attention to the development of TVs that can deliver a theater-like 3D experience and we think if we hold off until we actually get an in-home experience that works' added Daly.

However, while the film itself will be unavailable watch in the home in 3D, the upcoming DVD and Blu-ray releases will still offer one 3D treat. A new animated short entitled Bob's Big Break will be included on the discs, which was developed specifically for viewing with anaglyph technology. 'The short was specifically designed with magenta-and-green glasses in mind,' Daly claims, 'We even adjusted the color for 3D conversion to optimize the 3D experience'.
