OLED back in fashion as Samsung and LG prepare to fight over superthin panel market

HCC News Team's picture

Could OLED TV technology be about to rise from the dead? Sidelined through cost and complexity, the tech was looking like an SED-style cul-de-sac for its supporters, despite combining low power consumption and superthin design with startling colour reproduction and superb contrast. However both Samsung and LG now appear to be revisiting their plans to fast-track OLED production.

Organic panel specialists Samsung Mobile Display (SMD), a joint venture between Samsung Electronics and Samsung SDI, is reportedly considering a 1.5 trillion won investment in a new OLED production line. The facility, to be built in Tangjeong, would be a 5.5th-generation plant capable of producing OLED panels for TVs upwards of 30ins.

SMD is the world’s largest supplier of AM OLED (Active-matrix organic light-emitting diode ) panels, producing 20,000 a month, and has a client base which includes Sony, Samsung and Sharp.

Meanwhile LG has introduced its 15in OLED TV into the Korean market, using panels produced by LG Display. LG Display is also looking at constructing a 5.5th-gen line at its production facility in Paju, with a possible launch date of 2011. With industry predictions suggesting the OLED TV business could be worth $1.8 billion by 2015, could a race to dominate the nascent market be about to get underway?

Great news on OLED TV

Good to hear that Samsung and LG are looking to make a major investment in large-scale large-screen OLED TV production. I had my hands on the Sony XEL-1 last year and while very nice, OLED will never catch on unless these larger screen sizes are available.

Many have expressed their intent to pay a premium for a decent sized OLED TV. Perhaps in a couple of years this will be possible.

Thank God

Phew, what a relief.

The potential of this tech is massive and goes far beyond tv

SONY KDL-ZX
