LED-backlit TVs are rapidly becoming the must-have LCD screens of the higher-end of the TV market, and now Toshiba is bringing the same tech to displays as small as 5.7in.

The corporation’s Mobile Display arm has developed a range of innovative LED-backlit LCDs, initially designed for industrial applications.

Toshiba says its new TFT LED modules, which come in 5.7-, 8.4-, 10.5- and 12.1in sizes, have a life of 100,000 hours, effectively making them maintenance-free; it intends for them to be used within test and measurement gear, medical equipment and portable computers.

The company says that benefits of the LED backlight include lower power consumption and less electromagnetic noise, significant when it comes to industrial applications.
