The UK’s standalone Blu-ray player population will reach 250,000 before the end of the year. That’s the bullish prediction of the British Video Association.
Speaking at a showcase launch for Blu-ray music titles at London’s Metropolis recording studios last night, BVA spokesman Mike Brown said that ‘the market will really pick up this autumn.
'Around half of all UK homes now have an HD-ready TV. They’re just not HD viewers yet.’
According to the new BVA stats, there are also 1.4 million PlayStation 3 owners yet to be fully turned onto Blu-ray movies. ‘We currently have 500 Blu-ray titles in the market,’ adds Brown, ‘and this will rise to 800 by the end of the year. Of these, around 100 are music titles.’
One such music package is the upcoming release of The Police: Certifiable, a live concert from the band’s recent reunion tour. In addition to a Blu-ray disc, the set will come packaged with two CDs.
But speaking to Home Cinema Choice, drummer and composer Stewart Copeland said: ‘When it comes to audio quality you might as well throw the CDs away. Blu-ray is absolutely the cutting edge of sound reproduction at the moment. It is the standard I’m now making music for.’
According to the BVA, the 10 best selling music Blu-rays of all time are:
1 Rock Montreal Queen
2 The song remains the same Led Zeppelin
3 Live in Las Vegas – A new day Celine Dion
4 Copenhagen – Elements of life world tour Tiesto
5 Live at Donnington AC/DC
6 Live in Dublin Bruce Springsteen & Sessions
7 Remember that night – Live at the Royal David Gilmour
8 Elton 60 Live at Madison Square Garden Elton John
9 Live from Texas ZZ Top
10 Futuresex/Loveshow – Live from Madison Justin Timberlake
Blu-ray music ..really? and where do I listen to it?
Alan Smithee - 26 September 2008 - 6:39pmSo where do I listen to blu-ray music..at home only it seems and on the blu-ray player I don't own.
Will the blu-ray stuff cost us up to $30.00 a shot like the movies do. This is a marketing ploy of Gaming systems that sell their games at $50.00 a pop and a lot of them are crappy games.
And it still does not stack up to SACD format sound wise..so why
are they bothering?.
This list is useless.
I prefer SACD and at least they can produce a Hybrid SACD that I can listen to at home, in the car, and on my computer at work.
DVD-Audio support
Alan Smithee - 27 September 2008 - 2:51amWhere's the Blu-Ray player that will play my DVD-Audios?
There isn't one! This is what is stopping me from buying a Blu-Ray player. When I upgrade, I want to be able to throw out my old player, not keep it around just for my DVD-A discs.
No demand for DVD-A or SACD
badtzmaru - 27 September 2008 - 12:22pmI just don't think there's any real demand for BD players that can do SACD and DVD-A. The two formats should jsut be filed away with HD DVD as great systems that never took off. But if you love quality music you should back Blu-ray, it's the best option left. Music in Dolby TrueHD is better than either SACD and DVD-A anyway. Learn to live with more than one player. I have!
Does this mean we are likey
Alan Smithee - 1 October 2008 - 1:05pmDoes this mean we are likey to see 'audio only' BD discs similar to the excllent yet short lived DVD-Audio & SACD formats?
If so then I wish them well but can't see it catching on in this 'mp3/ipod world'
I'm in the same boat. Also,
Alan Smithee - 1 October 2008 - 1:11pmI'm in the same boat.
Also, there just isn't enough decent 'movies you want to keep' being made any more to warrant a purchase of a BD player.
There's only so many times you can keep watching the greats of the past like Star Wars, Indy, Godfather etc etc in one lifetime regardless of the quality. Nowadays movies are 'throwaway' like everything else
But high quality music, now that's a different story.
